Brunswick Palace (Braunschweiger Schloss) was the residence of the Dukes of Brunswick. After the Baroque predecessor building burned down during a revolt on 7 September 1830, Carl Theodor Ottmer designed a classicist three-wing palace. The foundation stone was laid in 1833 and the palace was completed in 1841.

Badly damaged in the Second World War, the building was demolished in 1960 following a controversial council decision and despite protests. Between 2005 and 2007 the façade was rebuilt using original stones, with the Schloss-Arkaden shopping centre behind it. Since 2008 a quadriga based on Ernst Rietschel’s model has once again stood on the portico.

Today the reconstructed palace houses the city library, the city archive, the city’s cultural department and the palace museum, which opened in 2011.
