The water tower on Hafenstraße in Bremerhaven-Lehe now stands in the city park. The forwarding agent Schwoon had it built in 1852 and 1853 next to the older Eits well, to designs by the Bremen architect Simon Loschen – hence the name “Schwoon water tower”. It supplied Bremerhaven’s residents and the ships in the harbour with drinking water.
Above a square base with sides of 11.5 metres rises an octagonal section with blind arcades, crowned by a conical roof with a lantern. In 1881 the tower received an iron tank of 500 cubic metres; in 1896 and 1897 it was raised by about nine metres and fitted with a tank of 600 cubic metres. It no longer has a function today; in 1989 it was sold to the publisher of the Nordsee-Zeitung. It has been a listed monument since 1984.
